Are polyurethane condoms safe?

Polyurethane is an elastomeric polymer with good elasticity, toughness and tear resistance. This material is widely used in the medical field due to its high biocompatibility and reliability, such as artificial hearts or vascular catheters.

Polyurethane material characteristics are of high strength, high density, and biocompatibility. Compared with traditional natural latex condoms, polyurethane condoms can be thinner, stronger, and non-allergenic.

Sagami Rubber Industries Co., Ltd. found that this material is very suitable for making condoms during a comprehensive review of various materials for more than 30 years. After a period of trial and error, Sagami finally created the world’s first polyurethane condom, Sagami Original, in 1998. Soon after its release, Sagami Original became one of Japan’s top brands for its skin-friendly feel that is completely different from other condoms.

We manufacture polyurethane condoms by using the same Japan technology, and after years improvement, the quality is better and better.

Although polyurethane condoms have so many advantages, their disadvantages are also obvious. First, they have poorer elasticity than latex condom, therefore, in actual use, if there is a lack of lubricant, their breakage rate is higher than that of ordinary latex condoms. Second, people who are not used to the skin-friendly nature of polyurethane will feel that this material has an uncomfortable plastic feel.

And in order to reduce the breakage rate, we now produced 003 polyurethane condoms, 004 polyurethane condoms. Although they’re not the thinnest polyurethane condoms, they have much lower breakage risks.
